The pension benefits enjoyed by the retiring Government servants in India have its roots in the Pension Act 1871 framed by the then British Government of India, which underwent several revisions, alterations and additions subsequently. The pension provided to Government servants is not given as a reward and but as a right as there is a binding obligation on the Government to pay it. However, pension can be forfeited on resignation, removal or dismissal from service. Even after retirement, a Government servant is expected to maintain good conduct to receive continuous pension. The pension can be even stopped or reduced in the event of the Government servant being convicted of a serious crime or found guilty of a grave misconduct.
